Jordan's King Abdullah II issued a special pardon on Sunday for 155 individuals convicted of insulting the king, according to a statement from the royal court. The statement noted that "the royal will was issued on Sunday, approving a special pardon for those convicted of the crime of extending the tongue."
The pardon included the complete waiver of penalties for the 155 convicted individuals. On October 2, the Jordanian monarch instructed his government to proceed with granting "special pardons" for those convicted in all cases related to "extending the tongue" against the king.
Article 195 of the Penal Code stipulates a prison sentence of 1 to 3 years for those convicted of verbally, in writing, or electronically insulting the king, or for sending a caricature or image in any form that undermines his dignity.
