Social media users celebrated an American woman described as a "heroic mother" after she sprang into action to defend her son when a mountain lion attacked him near their home in Southern California. The incident occurred last weekend when the woman's 5-year-old son was playing close to the house before a mountain lion appeared and began to attack the child.
Under normal circumstances, the child's life could have ended within seconds of the lion's attack; however, this did not happen. The mother arrived just in time and began to fight the mountain lion, delivering several kicks with her hands. She continued to bravely defend her son until she was able to pull him away from the small boy and continued to attack the lion until it fled.
Once the lion escaped, the child was immediately taken to the hospital due to serious injuries to his head, but his condition is now stable, and he is under close observation at a hospital in Los Angeles.
Patrick Foy, a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, noted that the wild animal ran a long distance through the green grass to escape the mother, who had nothing to defend her child but "maternal instinct," according to the area's surveillance cameras.
In a brief statement, California police confirmed that the mountain lion that attacked the child was killed after receiving a report of the incident. Wildlife police were dispatched to the scene, but due to the difficulty in controlling the lion, an officer shot it immediately.
The statement concluded that the true hero of this story is "the child's mother, who armed herself with nothing but her bravery to save her son's life."
