A survey of nearly 3,000 lawyers in California and Washington D.C. concluded that overworked female lawyers experience mental health problems and have a higher risk of alcohol consumption compared to their male colleagues. Bloomberg reported on the study, released Wednesday by the California Lawyers Association and the District of Columbia Bar, indicating that more women showed positive results for risky alcohol consumption compared to the past.
The study found that approximately one-third (34%) disclosed they engage in high-risk drinking, compared to 25.4% of men. Patrick Krill, a study co-author and expert in lawyer addiction and mental health, stated that many women "live in a materially worse state across the board."
This study follows a report from the American Bar Association in April indicating that the COVID-19 pandemic has led more women to consider leaving the profession, partly due to the pressures of work-life balance.
