The German Cancer Research Association stated that cervical cancer is a malignant growth of cells in the cervix. The main cause is infection with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV). The risk factors include multiple births, neglecting the hygiene of the genital area, long-term use of contraceptive pills, and smoking. Symptoms include bleeding after intercourse, or after menopause, heavy menstrual bleeding, foul-smelling or bloody discharge, and pain in the lower abdomen. It is important to consult a doctor immediately upon noticing these symptoms for early treatment, which increases the chances of recovery through radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapy with antibodies.
