A peculiar case involving medical malpractice has recently been examined by Austrian courts. An unnamed surgeon has been fined 2,700 euros after amputating the wrong leg of an elderly patient. The court in Linz stated in its ruling that the surgeon committed a grave error due to negligence, as reported by the British newspaper "The Guardian." The surgeon attributed the mistake concerning the 82-year-old patient to marking the healthy leg for amputation. The error was discovered two days after the surgery conducted at a hospital in the town of Freistadt. In response to the ruling, the surgeon stated that the mistake occurred due to a discrepancy in the information provided to him in the operating room.
