Death Sentences for 20 Individuals Involved in Abrar Fahad's Murder: Details Revealed

A court in Bangladesh sentenced twenty individuals to death on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a student in 2019 who criticized the government on social media, according to the prosecutor's statement to AFP. Prosecutor Abdullah Abu stated, "Twenty individuals have been sentenced to death and five others to life imprisonment in the case of Abrar Fahad's murder." The body of 21-year-old Abrar Fahad was found in his dorm room at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in Dhaka in October 2019. Abrar's father, Barakatullah, expressed his satisfaction with the ruling after it was announced, saying, "I am happy with the verdict. I hope the sentences are carried out soon." Hours before his murder, the young man had posted criticisms of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook, shortly after she signed a water agreement with India. Fahad was beaten with cricket bats and other sharp objects for six hours by 25 of his fellow members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League party.
