At least one person commits suicide every 48 hours in Lebanon, with the number of cases increasing by 35.5% since 2016, resulting in 1,366 fatalities due to suicide over an 11-year period. These figures were announced at the "Breaking the Silence on Suicide" conference organized by the National Mental Health Program, the World Health Organization, and the "Embrace" Association, with support from the French Development Agency and the Higher Institute of Business. Alongside the COVID-19 pandemic, Lebanon has suffered one of the most severe economic crises the world has seen since the mid-19th century, impoverishing the majority of its population and presenting them with the challenge of securing food and medicine, amidst a political and economic deadlock that peaked with the shock of the Beirut port explosion on August 4, 2020.
