The film "Nomadland" took home the lion's share of awards at the Spirit Awards for independent cinema, thereby strengthening its already strong chances at the Oscars scheduled for next Sunday. At the awards ceremony, often referred to as the "Oscars of independent films," the film directed by Chloe Zhao and starring Frances McDormand won four awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography.

The ceremony, held last night, also saw wins for other Oscar contenders this year, such as "The Sound of Metal," which won three Spirit Awards, "Promising Young Woman" (two awards), and "Minari" (one award).

These awards are usually presented on Santa Monica beach in the United States the day before the Hollywood Academy Awards; however, the COVID-19 pandemic forced organizers to opt for a virtual celebration.

"Nomadland" is considered the frontrunner for the Oscar for Best Film as it arrives at the Oscars with a collection of significant cinematic awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the Golden Globe for Best Drama Film, in addition to its victories at the BAFTA Awards and the American Producers Guild and Directors Guild.

The film presents a poetic backdrop of extreme job insecurity, directionless aging, and a feeling of helplessness amidst the ruins of capitalism, making it undoubtedly the most acclaimed and celebrated work during this award season amid the pandemic.
