UN: Forcibly Displaced People Worldwide Surpass 100 Million

The United Nations has announced that the Russian war on Ukraine has caused the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide to exceed 100 million for the first time ever. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees stated that the war in Ukraine was one of the factors that drove millions of people to flee, adding that long-standing conflicts in places like Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were other factors behind these large numbers. The commission considered this "alarming" figure should shake the world into action to end the conflicts forcing record numbers of people to flee their homes. It added that the number of forcibly displaced people had risen to 90 million by the end of 2021, driven by violence in Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
