Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha) has issued 10 tips and guidelines for parents and educators as the school year begins, to help prepare students for their return to school after the summer break. This follows two years of remote learning due to exceptional circumstances resulting from the spread of the Coronavirus. The guidelines also include medical advice to ensure students' health, particularly with changes in daily routines related to sleep, wake times, and meal schedules.
Dr. Duaa Barakat, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Al Ain Hospital, emphasized that the first days and weeks of returning to school require patience and perseverance from everyone until students and parents adapt. She encouraged parents to adhere to school schedules and maintain consistent communication with teachers.
She noted that students had grown accustomed to virtual learning and staying home during the past two academic years. Students in middle and high school may face some challenges as they adapt back to the traditional system, whereas children in preschool and elementary school, especially those attending school for the first time, may experience greater difficulties after two consecutive years of remote education. It is essential to address their needs specifically by introducing them to the system in a fundamental way. Teachers for this age group should treat them as if they are attending school for the first time, accepting their constant physical activities and lack of focus during lessons until they adjust to in-person schooling.
Dr. Barakat stressed the importance of guiding and assisting children by breaking down the curriculum and allowing time for breaks during lessons. She suggested utilizing this time for physical activities related to the lesson, such as distributing papers and books to classmates, and rewarding them for following rules with peers and teachers.
