Swedish Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson revealed on Friday the ruling Social Democratic Party's intention to impose a "millionaire tax" to ensure wealthier individuals contribute more to the welfare system. Andersson stated in an interview with the daily newspaper "Dagens Nyheter" that, despite a 50 percent increase in the income of the poor since the 1990s, the income of the wealthiest one percent of the population has more than tripled. She added, "Increased inequality can heighten the risk of fostering authoritarian and populist sentiments," according to Reuters. She clarified, "We are proposing several measures to reduce the income gap in Sweden in the long term," without providing details about the plan put forth by her party, not the government. According to Andersson, this tax should not include real estate and will have a maximum limit.
