Lavrov: The Breakdown of Relations Between Russia and the EU Has Been Ongoing for a Long Time

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced today, Monday, that the breakdown of relations between Russia and the European Union has been happening for a long time, initiated by the EU, noting that there are very few relations left between Moscow and Brussels.

Lavrov stated, following his talks with Finnish counterpart Pekka Haavisto: "In principle, anyone interested, in one way or another, in the situation in Europe knows that this breakdown has been occurring for many years now, and the EU is the one constantly severing ties." He continued discussing the gravest crisis in relations with the EU in recent years, asserting that very few relations remain between Moscow and Brussels, emphasizing that the Russian side is ready to continue dialogue.

Lavrov had previously announced Russia's readiness to sever relations with the EU if the latter imposed sanctions that posed risks to sensitive sectors of the Russian economy. He added, "We do not want to isolate ourselves from global life, but we must be prepared for that; if you want peace - prepare for war."

In response to the Russian statements, European Commission spokesperson Peter Stano remarked that Europe has taken into account the comments made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the Kremlin regarding relations with the EU. He stated, "We have considered Mr. Lavrov's remarks and the Kremlin's interpretations. Regardless of these statements, relations between the EU and Russia are not good, and we want to build meaningful relations with Russia based on respect for international law and adherence to it."
