After a four-year support program established by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the country in the spring of 2020, and with no similar program announced since, IMF experts conducted a virtual periodic mission in Tunisia.
The IMF stated that the proactive response of the Tunisian authorities in the spring allowed for containing the first wave of the pandemic; however, it led to a GDP contraction of 8.2% in 2020. The IMF emphasized the need to give absolute priority to spending on health and social protection, and called for the adoption of a comprehensive and credible reform plan to achieve sustainable, inclusive, and equitable growth in the medium term.
