Hafnawi clocked three minutes and 43.36 seconds to claim the title, finishing 0.16 seconds ahead of Australian Jack McLoughlin in the final moments. The bronze medal went to American Kieran Smith, who recorded a time of three minutes and 43.94 seconds. The first medal for Arabs in Tokyo was won by Tunisian Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi, who took home the silver in the 58 kg taekwondo event on Saturday.
