Syrian media outlets revealed this Tuesday morning the cause of death of Syrian artist Mohamed Al-Shamaat, famous for his role as "Abu Marzouk" in the series Bab Al-Hara, who passed away at the age of 85. Local media denied all rumors circulating on social media regarding the artist's death being due to the "COVID-19" virus, indicating instead that his passing was natural after a long battle with illness for several years. Several Syrian artists mourned the late actor on social media, expressing their sorrow at his death, including Taym Hassan, Toulay Haroun, Tamader Ghanem, Nadeem Sherabaty, and Sulaf Fawakherji.
Al-Shamaat was born in 1936 and began his career in theater, being one of the first members of the national theater in Syria. He then transitioned to television and cinema. Among the most prominent roles he played was "Abu Riah" in the series (Sah Al-Noum) alongside Dureid Lahham and Nihad Qalai, directed by Khaldoun Al-Malih, and the role of "Abu Marzouk" in the early parts of (Bab Al-Hara). The late artist participated in many immortal Syrian series, including (Sah Al-Noum), (Harat Al-Qasr), (Wadi Al-Misk), (Tarabeech), (Mazad Al-Alni), (Al-Khawali), and (Hara Kharej Al-Taghati).
