Aeroponics is an indoor gardening system that requires no soil or growth medium for cultivating plants. Utilizing an Aeroponics system to grow a variety of different plants, designer Sebastien Wiegand envisioned an indoor garden to reduce food waste and rediscover the numerous benefits of growing plants. This system is a form of plant cultivation that does not require soil or a growth medium. The roots of the plants are simply suspended in a dark chamber and periodically misted with a nutrient-rich spray that promotes growth. Wiegand states, "Growing plants at home also leads to increased awareness. The goal of the design was to bring the current aeroponic gardening system into everyone’s homes to raise awareness about our food."
To maintain a simple aesthetic, the Aeroponics Indoor Garden is constructed with a narrow steel frame and covered with natural wood cladding. This wooden cover gives the entire system an elegant look that fits any space, from the living room to the kitchen. Maintaining a similar appearance to a wooden bookshelf, the vertical garden houses four rows of different plants. The vertical design gives the indoor garden a slim profile while all internal equipment is stored at the base of the system. Users can find a tank containing the nutrient-rich spray, which is pumped through internal valves to distribute throughout the system to nourish the various plants. When there is an abundance of nutrient-rich mist, integrated drains direct the excess liquid back to the main tank, according to Yanko Design.
