The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, is heading to Tehran today, Saturday, to discuss the latest developments regarding the Iranian nuclear file. The Iranian representative to the IAEA, Kazem Gharib Abadi, stated in a tweet: "IAEA head Rafael Grossi will travel to Tehran today."
Abadi added that Grossi will meet with Iranian Vice President Mohammad Mokhber and the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, indicating that a joint statement will be issued afterward.
For its part, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that Grossi's visit to Iran would be part of the usual technical consultations between Iran and the agency. The Foreign Ministry expressed hope that the natural cooperation path between Iran and the agency would not be disrupted by any pressures.
The IAEA has accused Iran of obstructing its observers from monitoring developments in its nuclear program, noting that there are Iranian nuclear sites for uranium enrichment that the agency is unaware of. Grossi's visit comes at a time when the United States and Western powers are pressuring Iran to return to the Vienna negotiations in order to restore the nuclear agreement that collapsed after former U.S. President Donald Trump's withdrawal in 2018.
