Two new countries have recorded their first death from monkeypox, signaling the spread of the disease in both Europe and South America. Spain announced the death of a person due to monkeypox, which Spanish media described as the first such death in the European Union. The Spanish Ministry of Health reported that 120 people have been hospitalized so far with monkeypox, resulting in one death. The Spanish news agency and other media indicated that this was the first death from monkeypox in the country. The ministry did not provide further details, stating only that Spain has reported 4,298 cases of the disease, among which nearly 3,500 are men who have sex with men, while only 64 women are included in the total infected.
Before Spain announced its first death, Brazil, the largest country in South America, preceded it by a few hours. Brazil announced on Friday the registration of its first death from monkeypox, with the victim being a 41-year-old man. According to Reuters, Spain and Brazil became the first two countries to report a death from this disease outside Africa.
Experts believe that the outbreak of monkeypox in Europe and North and South America began from two parties held in Belgium and Spain. The current outbreak is considered the largest spread of the virus, classified by the World Health Organization as a global health emergency.
