Bill Nelson, the head of the American space agency NASA, stated that the next landing of astronauts on the Moon aims to ensure humans can stay longer on the lunar surface, living and learning new technologies there. In an interview with NBC, Nelson said, "We need to focus on staying on the Moon longer than just landing and being there for two days and then leaving." According to the NASA director, humanity will go to the Moon "to live and study there." He also noted that the scale of these missions precisely dictates that preparations for astronauts' landings on the Moon take a long time. Nelson added, "Once we go to the Moon, we will live and study there. We will develop new technologies, all for the purpose of going to Mars with other people." Nelson clarified that he does not believe it is feasible in the short term for someone to live on the Moon in the conventional sense.
