The death toll from the two suicide bombings that struck a market in the Iraqi capital on Thursday morning has risen to 21 dead and 44 injured.
The spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in Iraq told "Sky News Arabia" that what happened in Baghdad was: "a double terrorist attack by suicide bombers who detonated themselves in Tayaran Square in the heart of the capital." Sources indicated that a bomber wearing an explosive belt detonated himself, and after security forces and paramedics rushed to rescue the injured, another suicide bomber detonated himself at the scene, seemingly aimed at causing a greater number of casualties, according to our correspondent. Earlier, Reuters quoted security and medical sources stating that a suicide attacker detonated an explosive belt, killing 3 people and injuring 16 in a market in central Baghdad. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but its characteristics point to the ISIS terrorist organization, which has carried out such attacks in the past. It is worth noting that the area where the explosion occurred is the Bab al-Sheikh market near Tayaran Square in central Baghdad, known for its crowdedness with vendors and day laborers, where street sellers offer used clothing.
