UAE and UK Obtain International Decision on Girls' Education

On Monday, the UAE and the United Kingdom successfully obtained a resolution from the UN Human Rights Council concerning girls' education. The official account of the UAE's permanent mission to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva stated that "the Human Rights Council adopted by consensus the joint resolution titled (Achieving Equality in Every Girl's Right to Education), co-sponsored by the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom."

The UAE's permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ahmed Abdul Rahman al-Jarman, noted that the resolution took into consideration "the severe ramifications that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the right of girls to education." Al-Jarman added, "We focused on the urgent need to eliminate the structural barriers hindering the realization of girls' right to education."

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab tweeted on Monday, "We are proud that at least 80 countries participated in endorsing our call for the international community to commit to 12 years of quality education for all girls by 2030." Raab included a video clip in his tweet, stating, "We all know that educating girls leads to empowering women." He further remarked, "The COVID-19 pandemic has reversed a key factor in the decline of girls' education, as we have identified around 11 million girls at risk of not returning to school at all, so we must double our efforts."
