The German Association of Gynecologists stated that anemia is a common condition during pregnancy, primarily due to a decrease in the number of red blood cells. They explained that this deficiency is due to the increased demand from the fetus for growth and development components necessary for forming its blood. Additionally, anemia during pregnancy can also be caused by a deficiency of iron or folic acid in the foods consumed by the woman during pregnancy. Furthermore, repeated occurrences of bleeding in the mouth or gums may lead to anemia.
Regarding treatment, the association mentioned that a blood sample is usually analyzed initially to check if the woman has anemia, after which the doctor prescribes the appropriate treatment. The doctor often recommends that the pregnant woman increase her intake of iron-rich foods, such as red meat, liver, apples, and broccoli, or prescribes dietary supplements that contain iron, folic acid, and vitamins to enhance her blood production.
