Iraqi security sources reported that two rockets fell on the heavily fortified Green Zone in the capital, Baghdad, early Thursday morning, while the Iraqi army announced the crash of a military helicopter resulting in the death of all its crew members. Specifically, Iraqi security sources stated that at least two rockets hit the Green Zone, noting that there were no injuries reported. The sources added that one rocket struck a parking lot within the Green Zone, while the second rocket hit a nearby empty area.
On another note, the Iraqi army, in a statement, mentioned that one of its helicopters crashed during a combat operation in northern Iraq on Thursday, resulting in the death of its five-member crew, according to Reuters. The army indicated that the military helicopter fell near the town of Amirli in northern Iraq, approximately 170 kilometers north of Baghdad. The army's statement did not clarify whether the crash was due to enemy fire or a technical malfunction.
Despite the defeat of ISIS in 2017, remnants of the group have resorted to "hit-and-run" attacks on government forces in various regions of Iraq. Army officials noted that Iraqi security forces have conducted numerous operations in the area where the helicopter crashed in recent months to pursue militants.
