The World Health Organization has revealed that "COVID-19 still constitutes a global emergency nearly two and a half years after it was first declared." The organization’s emergency committee stated in a statement that "the increasing cases, ongoing viral evolution, and pressure on health services in several countries mean that the situation remains an emergency." The statement also noted that "the cases reported to the World Health Organization rose by 30% in the past two weeks," despite the committee acknowledging that population immunity has significantly increased due to vaccines. For his part, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus agreed with the committee's advice, warning that "the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over."
