French star Kylian Mbappé, from Paris Saint-Germain, has been awarded the Player of the Week in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League after leading his team to a decisive 4-1 victory against Spanish rivals Barcelona in the first leg match held last Tuesday.
Mbappé scored a remarkable hat-trick against Barcelona, contributing significantly to PSG's goal fest against Ter Stegen, making him the deserving player of the week. He surpassed Egyptian star Mohamed Salah from Liverpool and the national team in the race for the best player title, and also outperformed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and Sergio Oliveira from Portuguese club Porto, according to the list announced by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for the best player nominations.
The official UEFA Champions League Twitter account stated that Mbappé tops the list of the highest goalscorers under 21 years old in Champions League history, with 19 goals, following his hat-trick against Barcelona. It’s worth noting that Paris Saint-Germain has one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League thanks to Mbappé, as they will face Barcelona again in March for the decisive match to secure a place in the next round.
