Tight security measures have been implemented in the international zone surrounding Baghdad International Airport following a Katyusha rocket attack that occurred the night before last.
Sputnik news agency reported today, citing an Iraqi security source, that security checkpoints on the road leading to Baghdad International Airport, known as the international zone, began stringent vehicle inspections early in the morning. The source added that "inspections of vehicles and individuals entering via the special passage are now done through manual searches and K9 units, whereas previously it was only through K9 units."
As a result of the thorough inspections, severe traffic congestion has occurred along the road to the airport in western Baghdad, coinciding with traffic bottlenecks in various parts of the city, especially around the Green Zone, which has been under strict security measures and closures since the recent attack targeting the Al-Tayaran Square in the Al-Bab Al-Sharqi area of the capital last Thursday, resulting in hundreds of civilian casualties along with regional and international condemnations of the deadly bombings, calling for security forces to fulfill their duty to protect lives and property and to punish those responsible for the attacks.
Moreover, the Security Media Cell announced in a statement reported by Sputnik, the launch of three rockets towards Baghdad International Airport late on Friday night. The cell clarified that two rockets fell outside the airport, while the third landed on a citizen's home in the Al-Jihad neighborhood, causing material damage without any human casualties reported.
