Turkey Acknowledges: We Warned Opponents of Egypt

Under the title "Turkish Foreign Minister Admits: We Issued a Warning to Egypt's Opponents," Al-Arabiya reported on the Egyptian-Turkish relations. It highlighted that as part of Turkey's ongoing efforts to reach out to Egypt, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that a meeting at the deputy minister level will soon take place in Cairo. However, the most significant revelation in the Turkish minister's statements during a TV interview yesterday evening on Haber Turk concerned the Egyptian opponents from the Muslim Brotherhood residing in Turkey. He publicly acknowledged for the first time that his country had issued crucial warnings to some Egyptian opponents, particularly those who express extreme rhetoric against Egypt, ahead of normalization steps.

Regarding the Egyptian satellite channels broadcasting from Istanbul, Cavusoglu said, "I see some comments here and there on this issue, and talks about whether Turkey is betraying the Egyptian opposition. There are some opponents to whom we have issued the necessary warnings, especially those who excessively criticize Egypt."

Additionally, he mentioned: "In a meeting at the foreign ministers' level, we agreed on the necessity of taking certain steps for rapprochement between the two countries. Egypt invited us for a meeting at the deputy ministers' level, and we will meet in May, after which we will discuss assignments of the respective ambassadors."

Regarding ambassador exchanges between Ankara and Cairo, the Turkish minister stated, "Usually, if you agree with a country, whether it is Egypt or another, on appointing an ambassador, this will happen simultaneously when relations reach a certain point, and then there should be no issue in appointing ambassadors."

These statements came after the announcement by the head of the ruling Justice and Development Party's parliamentary block, Bulent Turan, earlier on Tuesday, proposing to parliament to establish a parliamentary friendship group with Egypt, according to the Anadolu Agency. Turan stated in press remarks, "We will submit a proposal to the office of the parliament's president to establish a friendship group between Turkey and Egypt."
