Tunisia Places Leading Ennahda Member and Former Minister Anwar Maarouf Under House Arrest

A representative from the Ennahda Movement in Tunisia has informed Reuters that the Ministry of Interior has placed prominent Ennahda party member and former minister Anwar Maarouf under house arrest without providing reasons for the action. Maarouf served as Minister of Communication Technologies from 2016 to 2020 and is considered a significant figure in the Ennahda party. This is the first action taken against an Ennahda leader since President Kais Saied announced the dismissal of the Prime Minister and suspended Parliament on July 25, labeling the measures as a coup. A source from Ennahda told Reuters, "Mr. Anwar Maarouf was informed by official channels that he is under house arrest." No comment could be obtained from the Ministry of Interior. Earlier this week, the president dismissed Minister of Communication Technologies Fadhel Karim, stating he would not allow the ministry to be a foothold for parties seeking to control the data of Tunisians or access their personal information.
