Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, emphasized the necessity of communication between the United States and Iran to make progress on the nuclear agreement. He indicated that holding an informal multilateral meeting under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) would be acceptable.
In a statement to Sputnik today, Ulyanov said, "There is a need for contact between Tehran and Washington in order to move forward. As far as I know, the Iranians are not yet ready to engage in bilateral communications with the Americans, but an informal multilateral meeting among current members of the JCPoA and the Americans could be acceptable to all." The Russian representative also noted that the only way to restore the proper implementation of the JCPoA regarding the Iranian nuclear program is to return unconditionally to the state it was in before the arrival of former U.S. President Donald Trump in the White House. He stated, "All indications suggest that the only way to restore the normal functioning of the nuclear agreement is to return without any preconditions to what it was before Donald Trump's administration."
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell expressed deep concern over the Iranian nuclear path, including Tehran's recent steps. Media reports noted Borrell's insistence on continuing diplomatic efforts to ensure the implementation of the nuclear agreement, representing the latest attempts to save the nuclear deal with Iran, where the remaining partners of the agreement will consult again with representatives from Tehran. All parties to the agreement "emphasized their determination to maintain the agreement."
