Snap Inc. aims to be the go-to company for mobile video editing, and announced a new iOS app called Story Studio during the annual partnership summit. This app provides users with editing tools specifically designed for mobile or vertical videos, pulling data from Snapchat and the Spotlight feature to help users understand how and what to create.
The new app targets content creators, offering many editing tools to make their content appear as professional as possible. While story editing tools remain available within Snapchat, content creators producing for Spotlight or prominent Snapchat stars may require more robust editing capabilities, which often leads them to edit their stories on computers.
Story Studio allows for precise frame-by-frame editing of videos, adding captions, stickers, and other visual elements, while benefiting from the company’s licensed music library. It also enables saving projects for later editing. Notably, content created in Story Studio will not carry a watermark, meaning if published across other platforms, it won’t have its reach diminished by algorithms.
However, many content creators prefer to do everything on their phones, which is why few powerful video editing tools are available. The company is launching a new app that integrates better with Snapchat. With Story Studio, users can view what’s trending on Snapchat, including sounds, themes, and lenses, enabling them to remix popular content and create their own.
Once editing is complete, users can share their video on Snapchat—using it to post a story or video in Spotlight. Story Studio also works with other platforms, allowing users to save projects or export videos to other applications on their phones.
Story Studio will be launched later this year, exclusively available on iOS for now. In addition to Story Studio, the company is releasing a web version of the Spotlight feature, enabling people to view Spotlight content without having to open Snapchat while browsing the web on desktop computers. Content creators will be able to upload videos to Spotlight from Google Chrome or Apple Safari.
