A network specialized in cryptocurrency transactions announced that hackers had breached its security systems and made off with a record haul valued at $600 million. The "Poly Network" released a plea asking traders managing wallets for storing cryptocurrencies to avoid the stolen tokens belonging to the "Ethereum," "Binance Chain," and "Ox Polygon" platforms.
The "Poly Network" sent a message to the hackers via Twitter stating, "The amount of funds you have stolen is the largest in the world of DeFi," referring to decentralized finance. It added, "This money that you have stolen belongs to tens of thousands of members of the cryptocurrency community." The "Poly Network" threatened to involve law enforcement but also offered the hackers a chance to "come to an agreement."
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not immediately respond to requests for comment. "Poly Network" tweeted, "We regret to announce that we have been attacked," noting that assets were transferred to accounts controlled by the hackers, and it published addresses used by the intruders.
"Poly Network" also did not respond to a request for comment from Agence France-Presse, but Twitter users conducted calculations and estimated the hackers' loot at about $600 million. This year, the total amount of stolen cryptocurrency, hacking, and fraud has reached approximately $432 million from the end of April until now, according to an analysis by the asset protection network "CipherTrace."
