Maximo Torero, the chief economist of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), confirmed that the world is facing a serious challenge due to the suspension of fertilizer exports from key countries, which will affect the 2023 crops. Torero stated, "If we cannot obtain all the fertilizers from the main exporters next month or within two months, we will face a significant challenge," explaining that the main exporters of potash fertilizers are Russia and Belarus. He emphasized that the issue pertains to the upcoming harvest in 2023, and therefore, "our main concern is the year 2023." Earlier, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced his intention to seek the restoration of grain exports from Ukraine, as well as fertilizers from Russia and Belarus, in order to alleviate the food crisis.
