The Chairman of the Sovereign Council in Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, stated that the dispute with Ethiopia is longstanding, adding that recognizing Sudan's sovereignty over the areas where the Sudanese army has recently deployed removes obstacles to relations between the two countries.
He noted on Saturday that Sudan's military is directed outward, not inward, emphasizing that the Sudanese army is responsible for securing the borders with Ethiopia to prevent any infiltration. Al-Burhan highlighted that Sudan is open to relations with Ethiopia, stating that acknowledging Sudanese ownership of the border areas removes all hindrances to our relationship with Addis Ababa.
He affirmed that any armed conflict in the border areas threatens security and peace on the continent and in the world, indicating that an agreement has been made with Ethiopia to ensure our armed forces secure the borders to prevent any armed groups from entering. Al-Burhan expressed that Sudan seeks borders that protect its rights, and once it is acknowledged that this land is Sudanese, there should be no obstacles to relations with Ethiopia. Earlier on the same day, a member of the Transitional Council and the official spokesman for the council, Mohamed al-Faki Suleiman, confirmed that Ethiopia has consistently adopted a policy of facts on the ground in dealing with its shared issues with Sudan.
