The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has suspended Cameroon international and Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana for one year due to doping.
Ajax Amsterdam stated in a press release, "The UEFA disciplinary committee has suspended Andre Onana for 12 months for violating anti-doping regulations after an out-of-competition test on October 30." The statement continued that the decision "is effective immediately and applies to all domestic and international football activities." The Dutch club indicated that a urine test revealed the presence of the prohibited substance "Furosemide" after the Cameroonian goalkeeper "accidentally" ingested his wife's medication. The statement confirmed that the UEFA disciplinary committee deemed that "Onana had no intentions of cheating." However, UEFA believes, based on the application of current anti-doping rules, that it is the athlete's duty at all times to ensure that no prohibited substances enter their body.
As a result, goalkeeper Onana will miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations hosted by his country. It is worth noting that Ajax Amsterdam and the Cameroon national team will appeal the suspension decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
