Biden States Protecting Women's Rights in Afghanistan Will Not Be Through Military Force and Urges for Their Evacuation

U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that waging war in Afghanistan does not provide solutions to violations of women's rights following the Taliban's takeover. In an interview broadcast by ABC, Biden stated, "The notion that we can ensure women's rights around the world through military force is incorrect." He continued, "Look at what is happening to the Uyghurs in Western China. Look at what is happening in other parts of the world," emphasizing that the way to combat violations of women's rights "is not through military invasion." He suggested that the means to address "this issue is through economic, diplomatic, and international pressure on them to change their behavior."

Biden noted that a large number of women are attempting to leave Afghanistan on U.S. evacuation flights at Kabul airport. He indicated that he urged his advisors to "put them on planes" and evacuate "their families." He added, "We must evacuate as many as we can." The European Union and the United States expressed "serious concern" on Wednesday regarding the situation of women in Afghanistan, urging the Taliban to avoid "all forms of discrimination and exploitation," according to a joint statement.
