The Iraqi News Agency reported on Wednesday that the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) thwarted an attempt to target electricity transmission towers in Salah al-Din province. The agency added that a force from the ninth brigade of the PMF foiled an ISIS attempt to attack the electricity transmission towers in the Abu Ajeel area of Salah al-Din.
According to a statement from the PMF, "Three motorcycles tried to target the electricity transmission towers in the Abu Ajeel area, but they were detected by thermal cameras belonging to the brigade and confronted, forcing them to flee."
During the summer months, Iraq faced a heightened electricity crisis, with several cities witnessing protests against power outages, particularly in the oil-rich province of Basra. Anger flared as Iran halted vital electricity supplies amid rising temperatures and organized sabotage of power towers in several areas.
These attacks prompted the Ministry of Interior to contract with a Chinese company to purchase drones to protect the power lines. The spokesperson for the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, Tahsin al-Khafaji, announced in July that terrorist organizations targeted more than 45 electricity towers.
