Energy stocks also dropped sharply due to a regulatory investigation into Exxon Mobil. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 177.26 points, or 0.57%, to close at 30,814.26 points. The S&P 500 index ended down by 27.29 points, or 0.72%, to 3,768.25 points, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped by 114.14 points, or 0.87%, to 12,998.50 points. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq lost about 1.5%, while the Dow Jones declined by 0.91%.
