British man Joseph Flavell, 19, suffered a brain injury after being hit by a car on a road in Stamadshire, England, in March 2020. At the same time as his injury, around 40 cases of COVID-19 were reported in the UK. The number of cases continued to rise, leading to the first lockdown a few weeks later on March 23, resulting in over 3.8 million additional cases.
According to Joseph's aunt, Sally Flavell, in an interview with The Guardian, he is unaware of the ongoing pandemic because he has been in a coma for 10 months, and now his awareness is starting to improve. She added, "I don't know where to begin. A year ago, if someone had told me what would happen over the year, I don't think I would have believed it. I have no idea how Joseph will process everything we have all been through."
It is noteworthy that before his accident, he was an enthusiastic student in music and sports, and was set to receive a gold award from the Duke of Edinburgh, which recognizes young people's achievements. His aunt told the newspaper, "We still have a long way to go, but the progress he has made in the past three weeks has been absolutely incredible."
