Manchester United players Anthony Martial and Axel Tuanzebe suffered racial abuse following their 2-1 loss to Sheffield United on Wednesday.
Manchester United issued an official statement condemning the racial abuse directed at their players. The statement from Manchester United, published on their official website, read: "Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse the players received on social media after last night’s match." Always and forever, #UnitedAgainstRacism. — Manchester United (@ManUtd_AR) January 28, 2021.
The statement continued: "We totally condemn it, and it is encouraging to see other fans condemning it on social media as well." It added: "Manchester United will never tolerate any form of racism or discrimination and is committed to a long-term campaign against it through our anti-racism initiative. Identifying these anonymous fools remains a challenge. We urge social media platforms and regulatory authorities to enhance measures to prevent this type of behavior."
It is noteworthy that with the loss, Manchester United's points total stands at 40, placing them second, just one point behind the leaders Manchester City who have 41 points and a game in hand. Meanwhile, Sheffield United increased their points tally to 8, remaining at the bottom of the Premier League table after 20 rounds of the competition.
