The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that the European Union's imposition of sanctions on the Syrian Foreign Minister is a reckless decision and an unconstructive step that would exacerbate the Syrian crisis and complicate the political settlement process in the country.
On Saturday, spokesperson Said Khatibzadeh clarified that imposing sanctions on Syrian Foreign Minister Dr. Faisal Mekdad by the EU is an unreasonable and unconstructive move that would increase the Syrian crisis and complicate the political resolution of the conflict. Khatibzadeh pointed out that sanctioning the Foreign Minister, as the official responsible for foreign policy, does nothing but hinder the peace process, emphasizing that such an objectionable measure will only lead to further disputes and an increase in distrust between Brussels and Damascus.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson deemed the EU's decision to be reckless, urging the European Union to reconsider this action. He noted that it was expected for the EU to condemn the Israeli attacks and its aggression against Syrian territories, which violate the country's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to express serious opposition to the unjust American sanctions against the Syrian people.
It is worth mentioning that the EU Council announced in a press release on Friday (January 15) that it decided to add Faisal Mekdad's name to the list of individuals subject to restrictive European measures regarding Syria, following his recent appointment as Foreign Minister.
