Iraq: Execution of the Killer of

The Qadisiyah Criminal Court in Iraq issued a death sentence by hanging on Thursday for a convict involved in the murder of "Teacher Maryam" in Al-Sudair district several months ago. The Supreme Judicial Council stated in a statement that the court's decision came after the killer confessed to his crime, indicating that "the victim had asked him to take her home after she was stopped on a public road while returning from work, but he killed her and dumped her body in the river."

In April, the "Hamzah Investigative Court" confirmed the statements of the accused (H. M. Sh.) who explicitly admitted to killing the victim and throwing her body in the Al-Sudair River due to her resistance against his attempted assault, according to a statement from the council. The statement noted that "the court validated the accused's confession and conducted a demonstration which matched his confession."

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced on April 22 that it had arrested "a suspect in a murder case that occurred in Al-Sudair district, which resulted in the death of a 25-year-old teacher." The directorate for police affairs stated that "the suspect, who is 33 years old, confessed during the investigation that the victim had asked him to take her home from the public road while returning from work."

The suspect confessed to "assaulting the girl, then strangling her and dumping her in one of the tributary rivers." The Iraqi security forces, under the direct supervision of the relevant investigative judge, apprehended the killer three hours after the crime was committed, according to the judicial council.
