Leaks from the recent heads of state meeting in Iraq have discussed the postponement of the early elections scheduled for June.
Russian Today reported on its website that Iraqi parliament member from the "Fatah" Alliance, Ahmed Al-Kanani, stated that "the government is unable to conduct the elections in June, as its tenure is short and it needs more time to prepare for the elections and achieve the expected results." Al-Kanani added that the circulated leaks from the recent heads of state meeting indicate a desire to postpone the elections to October, noting that some political forces are not prepared for the elections, especially the parties supported by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi.
Iraqi cleric Moqtada Al-Sadr warned against the postponement of the early elections scheduled for June 6, urging citizens to update their electoral records.
It is worth mentioning that Iraqi Minister of Culture and government spokesperson Hassan Nazem previously confirmed the government's desire for international monitoring of the elections to ensure their integrity.
Additionally, it should be noted that days ago, the heads of state in Iraq (presidential, ministerial, parliamentary, and judicial) convened to discuss preparations for the early elections, which Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi set for June 6.
Al-Kadhimi announced in a televised speech that the date for the early legislative elections is June 6, 2021, promising to secure and protect the elections and provide the necessary requirements. The United Nations welcomed Al-Kadhimi's announcement, considering it a response to a "major popular demand," and expressed its readiness to "provide all advisory and technical support" for conducting "free, fair, and credible elections."
