"Legal Opinion" Resolves Controversy Over Part-Time Marriage in Egypt

The Egyptian Fatwa House commented on Sunday regarding the emergence of new names for marriage contracts, such as "part-time marriage," asserting that it reflects a desire for fame and challenges traditional values. The Fatwa House stated in a message on its official Twitter account: "It is inappropriate to succumb to calls for modern terminology in marriage contracts that have recently increased, as they conceal a desire for appearance and fame and destabilize values, leading to confusion in society and negatively impacting the meaning of family stability and cohesion that our noble religion emphasizes and state laws protect."

They further added, "What some individuals are doing by introducing new names for marriage contracts and stipulating a specific time duration, among other things, leads to the invalidation of this contract’s validity. They emphasized that 'legitimate marriage is one that aims for permanence and continuity, without being bound by a specific time; otherwise, it would be an impermissible marriage, and the legal implications of marriage would not apply.'"

The phenomenon of "part-time marriage," defined as a time-limited marriage or one agreed upon for a specific period by the parties, has sparked widespread debate in Egyptian society and on social media, with supporters and opponents. Proponents of this type of marriage argue that it helps reduce the age of marriage and the prevalence of divorce. In contrast, the larger sector of opponents believes that marriage is more sacred than these notions, seeing women as commodities that are bought for a limited time, prompting some to ask: Since when has marriage been measured by the hour in response to the advocates of this new trend?
