More than 300 homes have been consumed by flames and lava from the erupting volcano on La Palma, one of the Canary Islands in Spain. Since the volcano began erupting last week, thousands of tons of lava have flowed, destroying hundreds of houses and forcing nearly six thousand people to evacuate. However, a lone house in the midst of one of the farms defied this destructive fury and survived miraculously, which astonished the world, especially after images and videos of the house standing amidst the ash spread.
According to local media, the farm is owned by a couple from Denmark who are 80 years old and purchased it 30 years ago. However, they have not been able to visit it for about two years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic that swept the world.
The volcanic lava has been ongoing for several days, with some scientists predicting that the eruption may continue for weeks. Yesterday, new volcanic explosions caused lava to be ejected into the air as a new vent opened, forcing authorities to close the airport, while people lined up in long queues to leave the island using ferries.
While the eruption has not resulted in serious injuries or fatalities so far, 15% of the economically important banana crop on the island is threatened with damage, which in turn threatens thousands of jobs.
