Pope Expresses "Regret" for Inability to Travel to Africa

Pope Expresses

Pope Francis expressed his "regret" for being unable to undertake his planned trip on Saturday to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan, which was postponed indefinitely in June due to knee pain. The Pope said in a video message published by the Vatican today: "The Lord knows how sorry I am that I was forced to postpone this long-awaited visit. But let us not lose hope and let us nurture the hope that we will meet as soon as possible."

The Pope continued speaking to both countries he intended to visit, saying: "I think of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, of the exploitation, violence, and insecurity it suffers, especially in the east of the country, where armed clashes continue, causing many and terrible sufferings, exacerbated by the indifference of many."

He added: "I think of South Sudan and the cry for peace from its people, who are exhausted by violence and poverty, and who are waiting for tangible realities from the national reconciliation process, which I wish to contribute to."

The Pope further stated: "Dear friends in Congo and South Sudan, words are not enough at this moment to express to you the closeness I wish to convey and the affection I feel for you."

The Vatican announced on June 10 the postponement of this trip, raising concerns about the Pope's health. In early April, during a two-day visit to Malta, the Pope appeared weak due to joint issues and had to use a platform to assist him in boarding and disembarking from his plane.

In May, Lebanon also announced the postponement of a papal visit that was scheduled for June, citing "health reasons." However, this was the first time the Vatican announced a postponement of an overseas trip for similar reasons.

Nonetheless, the Pope announced in June that he would indeed visit Canada from July 24 to 30.

The Argentine pope, who is suffering from severe pain in his right knee and has been appearing in a wheelchair since early May, said he is receiving anti-inflammatory injections containing corticosteroids.

He is also experiencing hip pain that causes him to limp. He underwent a delicate surgery on his colon in July 2021.
