Will Lebanese Open the Door to Change on May 15?

U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price confirmed to "Al Arabiya" and "Al Hadath" the "importance of holding elections in Libya and Lebanon." Regarding the Lebanese crisis, he stated yesterday, "We want to see free, fair, and transparent elections, and it is clear that these elections will culminate on May 15." He expressed hope for the formation of a government that represents the Lebanese people shortly after the elections, noting that "government instability has been a key driver of the many hardships faced by the Lebanese people." He added, "We continue to work with the Lebanese people; it is evident that the International Monetary Fund is negotiating with the Lebanese government, and we will do what we can to alleviate some of the humanitarian burden that years of instability and corruption have placed on the Lebanese people."

These statements confirm that the international community is keenly focused on Lebanon and is closely monitoring its elections. Major world capitals are on standby to assist Beirut with support, aid, and funds, but they are waiting for a change in the corrupt political authority currently governing the country, according to diplomatic sources for "Al Markaziya." Price clearly indicated that the corruption perpetuated by the system for years is a major cause of the Lebanese crisis. This means that if significant reforms and serious decisions in this regard are not made by a new, clean political class that is truly capable and willing to enact change and reform, the Lebanese will remain trapped in the pit they have been sinking into for months.

In any case, sources continue, Price spoke on behalf of the entire international community; Paris, Riyadh, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Washington, and London all are betting on the elections to bring change and salvation to Lebanon through the ballot boxes. So, will the Lebanese be ready and put their path to redemption on track by May 15?
