A new study has revealed what is known as the "sugar rush" and its significant impact on our activity and mood. However, the belief that sugar affects our mood is nothing but a pure myth, as sugar has almost no effect on our mood.
In fact, consuming too much sugar can make people feel more tired and less alert than usual. Within 30 minutes of eating sugary foods or other carbohydrate-rich foods, individuals may experience lethargy and fatigue. After 60 minutes of consuming sugar or other carbohydrates, people tend to feel less attentive and have reduced concentration. It's noteworthy that these conclusions come from a review of 31 separate studies involving nearly 1,300 people, which examined the effect of sugar on various mood aspects, including alertness, depression, anger, and fatigue.
**The Impact of Sugar on Our Lives**
The results showed that:
- Sugar had almost no effect on mood, regardless of the amount people consumed.
- The idea of a "sugar rush" is a myth and a pure legend.
- After eating sugar, individuals were less alert and more fatigued than others.
Dr. Konstantinos Mantzisis, the first author of the study, stated: "The idea that sugar can improve mood has been widely influential in popular culture, to the extent that people around the world consume sugary drinks to become more alert or to maintain their energy. However, our results clearly indicate that such claims have not been proven, and if anything is certain, it is that sugar can make you feel worse and fatigued."
Dr. Sandra Sonram-Lea, a co-author of the study, said: "The rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in recent years highlight the need for evidence-based dietary strategies to promote a healthy lifestyle throughout life. Our findings suggest that sugary drinks or snacks do not provide the refreshing effect of energy or alertness that we previously believed."
