Reuters reported that the United States informed the Security Council of the cancellation of a previous request from the Trump administration to impose UN sanctions on Iran. Acting U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN, Richard Mills, stated in a letter to the Security Council on Thursday that the U.S. is retracting the Trump administration's announcement from September 2020 to reinstate all UN sanctions on Iran.
An American official disclosed that Washington will accept an invitation from the European Union for talks with Iran. The official also noted that the Iranian UN mission was informed about easing travel restrictions for Iranian diplomats. Additionally, Reuters cited a French diplomatic source stating that the U.S. sent messages regarding its readiness to negotiate with Iran during the upcoming "5+1" group meeting.
Foreign ministers from France, Britain, and Germany welcomed the U.S. announcement of its intention to return to diplomacy with Iran. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that if Iran returns to its commitments under the nuclear agreement, the U.S. would do the same.
The European trio expressed approval of the U.S.'s plan to resume diplomatic engagement with Iran. They released a joint statement expressing concern over Iran's recent activities in uranium enrichment, underscoring the importance of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. The European trio and the U.S. reiterated their shared goal of seeing Iran fully adhere to its commitments and urged it not to take steps in suspending the Additional Protocol and reducing inspections. They called on Iran to refrain from any new actions, including withdrawing from the Additional Protocol, warning against limiting the work of International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors.
The European trio and the U.S. also urged Iran to release all their nationals detained in the country.
