The African Football Confederation (CAF) issued an official statement regarding the incident at the Olympique Stadium in Cameroon during the match between the host nation and Comoros in the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations, which ended in favor of Cameroon 2-1. However, it resulted in the deaths of at least eight fans and many others injured due to a stampede outside the stadium in Cameroon, which is hosting the Africa Cup of Nations, according to official media reports. CAF stated in an official statement: "We have been informed of the events that took place at the Olympique Stadium on the night of January 24, 2022, during the Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations match between the host country Cameroon and Comoros, and we are currently investigating this matter to gather more details about the incident." It added: "We are in constant communication with the Cameroonian authorities and the local organizing committee, and CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has sent Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba to assist the injured in hospitals in Yaoundé."
