The "Kanana" tribe in Iraq, to which the killer of writer and political analyst Hisham Al-Hashimi belongs, condemned what it called the crime committed by officer Ahmed Al-Hamdawi, while an Iraqi activist was stabbed in Al-Nasiriya. The General Sheikh of the Kanana tribe, Adnan Al-Danbus, called on the executive and judicial authorities to impose the harshest penalties and to seek just retribution from the criminal and those who planned the crime.
The spokesperson for Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi stated that the punishment for Al-Hashimi's killer will be severe since he is an officer. Al-Kadhimi announced the arrest of Al-Hashimi's killers, confirming via Twitter that he promised to catch the killers and fulfilled that promise. He added that everyone has the right to criticize, but he will not act for cheap announcements, stating that he will do his duty as best as he can to serve the Iraqis and uphold justice.
On Friday, Iraqi authorities broadcast a recording of the killer of writer Hisham Al-Hashimi nearly a year after his assassination, revealing that the perpetrator is an officer in the Ministry of Interior with the rank of First Lieutenant. According to the accused's confessions, he is a First Lieutenant in the Ministry of Interior and killed Al-Hashimi with his official weapon. The killer indicated that he was working with three others who were monitoring Al-Hashimi and waiting for the right moment to assassinate him.
The assassination of Al-Hashimi was not the only case but one of dozens of similar cases. According to the Iraqi Human Rights Commission, armed groups have carried out 86 assassination attempts in which 35 people were killed, including activists, journalists, and locals. Despite the different classifications of those who were assassinated, they shared a common stance against Iran and the influence of its armed groups in Iraq.
In a related matter, "Al-Arabiya" reported that activist Abu Elyas Al-Saadoun was attacked with knives by unknown assailants on a side road in Al-Nasiriya. It was added that activist Al-Saadoun is among the protesters demanding their rights in Al-Nasiriya, the center of Dhi Qar Governorate.
